This info was available at the registration day. It outlines a few of the things going on on a typical boardriders day, hopefully this is of assistance to those who are new to Avoca Boardriders.
These guidelines for the day's event have been adopted to create a level playing field for all the members. Remember, Avoca Boardriders is all about having fun, mateship and brotherhood.
Guidelines, rules and information
- Everyone meets at the Shark Tower carpark's viewing platform prior to 7am. Here the contest's location is decided.
- Contest registration happens from 7—7:30am. Registrations are cut–off at 7:30am — no names will be taken after then.
- Please note that due to legislative and insurance requirements you need to be a paid financial member to compete. No pay, no play!
- At registration you will need to sign against your name on your division's registration form. You cannot get someone else to sign, Surfing NSW insurance and affiliation regulations require that your signature will form part of the waiver which will be attached to the “competition risk assessment” form for that day. The risk assessment form is available for viewing when you sign in.
- On registering your name you will also need to pay a $1 entry fee, this is mandatory for all competitors. You will then receive a numbered ticket which goes into our lottery, drawn when the results are announced at the end of the day. You need to be present to claim your prize.
- After you have registered for the day's competition, it is requested that you assist with the unpacking of the trailer and the set up of the tents and other comp stuff. Remember, many hands make light work! It would be fantastic if you can help pack up at the end of the day too!
- Heats are drawn at the 7:30am cut–off time using randomly selected numbers to make 4–man heats.
- Contest commences between 7:45am and 8am.
- Once heats are drawn, no changes or substitutions can be made unless they are approved by the contest director.
- Competitors have 5 minutes to paddle out to their competition bank. This is indicated by a yellow flashing light and/or flag. This also indicates to competitors surfing that there is 5 minutes left in their heat.
- Heats run for a duration of 20 minutes, unless you are otherwise notified.
- When north and south banks are surfed during a competition (double–banking), competitors that surfed in red or white rash vests judge on the north bank. Competitors who surfed in blue or yellow rashies judge the south bank.
- There are 3 judges and 1 spotter when judging heats. Judging forms are filled in stating the division, round number, heat number and which bank the heat is on (north or south). Please make sure that the names of judges and the spotter are indicated on the judging seats. In addition, the form is to be filled out beautifully in legible writing so the person tallying can read it!
- If under extraordinary circumstances (ie. flying pigs) your heat occurs at the same time as your judging slot, please notify a committee member so a substitute judge can be arranged.
- It is requested that judges be at the appropriate bank 5 minutes early.
- Should a competitor not show up to judge their respective heat, a 50–penalty is incurred on their yearly point score.
- Should a competitor not show up to their next heat to compete, he/she receives the points for last place in the heat they missed.
- Judges need to be left alone whilst judging heats. Anyone found distracting judges can be penalised, disqualified or buried up to the neck in sand.
- Judging is the most important role in the competition and should be done with fairness and impartiality in mind. Judge as you would be judged by others. There are no names or identities in a heat, only rashie colours!
Free–surfing in contest area
- Any competitor repeatedly warned for free–surfing in the area may be disqualified from competition.
- If the surfer has been eliminated for the days competition they will lose any points gained on the day.
- With regards to the above two points, the competitor can regain their position or points by judging the next 5 heats (if the offence is minor).
- Any free–surfing competitor found guilty of dropping in, interfering, snaking or colliding with a competing surfer in a heat will be disqualified.
- If a surfer has violated the above code and continues to surf in the area, he/she risks having all points removed from their yearly point score.
Cheers and we look forward to a fantastic year. Let's hope Huey gives us some magical Sundays!
