Last (first) comp

Well, the first comp is done and dusted, although it was held in what can be best described as average waves to say the least. A great day was seemed to be had by all who attended. Slight changes to the comp format delivered some fresh and positive results. The introduction of parent–assist/super–groms was great to see. With all ages and genders of the club represented in one heat. It really could herald a new era and direction for the club's future. However, the most pleasing aspect of the day for my part was our move to enable our junior surfers to compete in our open division. Where all who attempted did more than just make up the numbers. With at least four surfers making the semi finals.

Kirra Teams Challenge

Since the last comp Avoca Boardriders competed in the Kirra Teams Challenge. We finished a credible 15th from 36 teams, with a team decimated by injury, work commitments and the man's rules (making one of our surfers ineligible to compete). A solid team of seasoned competitors bolstered with youth and exuberance flew the flag proudly. Notable exploits saw Nick Leslie win his heat to the determined 14 year old cousin of Joel Parkinson, who with youth and ignorance on his side, hassled our more seasoned stalwart all the way. I implore all of our junior members to attempt this next time the point is breaking and see how far it gets you. Brendon Back finished a 12 hour shift and flew directly to the Gold Coast to win his heat with a flair and style that is uniquely Brendon, only to get back on a plane land in Sydney and do another 12 hour shift. Dane Atchison produced one of the highest wave scores of the event 9.33, won his heat and relegated Kirra Boardriders to second place. A huge thank you to the entire team and supporters who invested so much, Well get 'em next year.
