It's been a while, but better late than never. Here's some stuff about the last comp of 2007, the Dave Ward Coke Memorial and the Kings of the Coast 2007. Use the links below to skip to the different sections if you want, this page is pretty long. Also, a big thanks to Rob Dog for getting this stuff together for the site.
Dave Ward Coke Memorial
Avoca Board Riders once again dominated another contest held on the central coast, this time at the Dave Ward Memorial. The club had a contestants competing in all divisions from under 12's to Grand Masters.
The 1st day of competition saw the guys battling it out on 3–foot occasional 4–foot Forries lefts, with great results and seeing the boy's progress to the semi's in all divisions.
Day 2 the contest moved to Wambi, where by mid morning the nor easter started to kick in slightly but a 3 foot wave was still on, providing some exciting surfing. Young Brendan Hay being the only under 12 to register in the comp naturally was given the 12's title, but had to compete in the under 14 division where he held his own and made it through to the finals with brother Josh and fellow Avoca Board Rider Beau Wills who surfed exceptionally well and dominated the division.
The under 16–division saw Isaac Capilli progress to the finals where he had to battle it out with opposition from Ti–Tree, Wambi and Forries clubs. The 1st half of the heat final saw Isaac going out firing and obtaining several high scoring backhand waves. Making it through to the under 18 finals was Shaun Wills who surfed consistently through out the contest and put together some high scoring combo's grabbing the judges attention.
Dan Brown (senior) progressed to the over 28 division final and was every where as usual and had the opposition baffled, you could hear whispers from the crowd “who is that guy, where is he from”. Over 35's saw Steve Liddle surf his way into the finals of his respective division and push his opposition to the limits. Masters division Dave Witt and Grand Masters Rob Capilli unfortunately was knocked in the semis both jagging 3rd place and missing out!
All the guys from the club that competed surfed well and wore our colours with pride congratulations to all the competitors and winners!

Kings of the Coast
In its 2nd year the “Kings of the Coast” tag team contest pitted the best of the Central Coasts Board Riders clubs teams up against each other in an origin style clash.
The following 6 clubs threw down the gauntlet to determine the best club in the region; Avoca Board Riders, Wamberal Express, Macmasters, Forresters, North Shelly and Norah Head. All fielding a team of 20 across the four divisions. One surfer from each team of 5 in each division would catch 2 waves, then return to the beach, and tag their teammate, with each division having an hour to catch their 10 waves. In addition, the total team scores from the day's action determine the winner.
Wamberal Beach provided an incredible forum for the hot crop of competitors dueling it out in 1m waves. Battle lines were drawn in the sand as supporters gathered behind their club boxes to cheer on their respective teams and heckle the opposition. The Avoca boys were up against some tough competition, which were all hungry to take us down.
The Junior men's division was first up in this pressure cooker tag team event, and the junior team consisting of (young) Dan Brown, Cameron Pitts, Liam Baron, Jacob Wooden and Wade Carmichael all surfed a solid signature event and proved to strong to the challenging clubs and took out first place in the junior men's division putting Avoca Board Riders on top of the ladder and setting the pace for the rest of the ABC crew!
The next division to hit the water was the grommets team, made up of Aidan Cashin, Shaun Wills, Jack Courtney, Josh and Brendan Hay. The boys surfed well, maintained consistency, and continued to amass valuable points to the clubs tally by achieving 3rd place in their division.
By this stage of the day the situation was becoming quite tense, with the scores being very tight, with Avoca Board Riders now sitting in 3rd place but still in striking distance! The crowds on the beach were all getting very vocal supporting their respective teams, the atmosphere was totally amped!
Next up to the blocks was Avoca's illustrious Senior Men's Team of Adam Robbo, Mick Allinson, Sean Waddell, (old) Dan Brown and Jamie Beal, and these seasoned campaigners went off firing. Robbo first out claiming his 2 high scoring waves in quick succession, setting the pace for his team mates who followed suit with relentless carving of the waves to claim 2nd place in the senior men's division.
The last division of the day was the Opens final; the scores were so tight that only 3 points separated Avoca, North Shelly and Macs. The stage was set for an epic opens final with the result determining who would be Kings of The Coast! It was now crunch time and no punches were pulled by the Avoca Board Riders Opens Team of Nick Leslie, Dan Moore, Brent Power, Sam Chell, and Dane Atchinson. The boys went on the rampage unleashing a series of innovative maneuvers to out class the opposition. Dan Moore a stand out with the best wave of the day. It was powerful committed surfing by the opens team, which amassed an excellent point scoring tally to lay down the foundations of an Avoca Board Riders win and achieving 1st Place in the Opens division!
Even though the contest was over and prior to the results being announced, the rivalry between the clubs supporters was still full on, with deafening chanting, hooting and heckling mainly directed at us was counter reacted with an almighty cheer from the Avoca team members and supporters when Avoca Board Riders were crowned “Kings of The Coast”. Victory is sweet! Don't you love to be hated!
Congratulations to all the team members and team manager Mick Power, the whole club are all proud to see you guys bring home to Avoca Board Riders Inc, the “KINGS OF THE COAST” crown!
